After my discovery of the Urban Decay section in a local Shoppers Drug Mart, I couldn't help but treat myself to the 24/7 Jackpot set that includes nine travel sized shades of these award winning liners as well as a full sized Zero pencil. I have only used a select few of these in the past, so this was a brilliant opportunity to try some of the colours I may not have bought otherwise.

Here are all ten swatches:

Starting from LEFT to RIGHT:

Rockstar - a dark eggplant
Gunmetal - pewter shade with hints of silver glitter
Binge - navy blue
Ransom - bright shiny purple
Electric - a bright blue with a hint of sheen
Stash - dark golden olive green
Mildew - dark green (reminds me of MAC Humid e/s)

urban decay + 905 = love

Feast your eyes my beauty babes of the 905 area! Although this may not be news to some, I was super stoked to discover a Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique in my area that carried URBAN DECAY. Amazing! Unfortunately for my wallet, I can now justify buying more UD goodies now that I "save" money on gas driving that little bit further to Sephora. See how I can make myself beauty guilt-free?!

For those wondering where this fabulous (and magical - in my opinion) location is, I will tell you. This particular SDM is at Garden and Rossland in Whitby. It's a very nice store and the staff is amazing. Very friendly and as you can see from the pics I took, quite accommodating and helpful to beauty bloggers armed with an iPhone camera. *chuckles*

The major question that was on my mind (and I'm sure in all of yours) is whether or not this SDM carried the coveted Naked Palette. Yes they do. Are there any in stock? Unfortunately, but not surprising, no. You can, as I did, put your name on a list to get your hands on one when they restock.

Another cool thing is that this location is hosting a big beauty event called 'Bright Lights, Big City'. This is happening Wednesday November 24th from 1pm until 9pm. You can reserve appointments to get beautified by some pretty impressive artists coming in from Dior, Smashbox and Clarins. The star of the event will be the attendance of Urban Decay's beauty expert and international makeup artist, Eric Jimenez. Appointments for him and the other artists are limited so I suggest going to the SDM to book a spot or call (905) 430-6967 x42.

I hope this discovery has been helpful for those who didn't know we could get Urban Decay in the Durham Region. As for the peeps who had already discovered this lone UD-carrying SDM, perhaps you might be glad to have heard of the amazing event happening there. In any case, please let me know if you find other SDM locations that carry this brand so we can spread the word.

skin: more than meets the eye

I'm sure all of you are aware that I am a working makeup artist, but did you know that I am also a licenced esthetician?

Granted, I may not perform facials, pedicures or massages anymore but skin care is definitely an important element in doing a great job as a makeup artist. I stress a good skin care regimen to all of my clients. Surprisingly enough, I still get a lot of people in my chair who reply to my universal question of "What are you currently using on your skin?" with a shameful answer of "Soap and water." In this day and age, that answer will not suffice.

I am 31 years old. I am no example of perfection. I have a drink now and then, don't get enough rest, sometimes forget to wash my face before bed, and shamefully have a cigarette or two...or three. I tell you this because DESPITE all of that icky stuff I do, for my age, my skin looks great in comparison to some other people my age (and even YOUNGER).

The reason for this is: A - I stay out of the sun. B - Good genes. C. Proper skin care.

The key point in my rant today is skin care, kids. More specifically, eye care. I have been diligent with a solid skin care routine since my late teens, and started using an eye cream at twenty. I know that may have seemed premature to use an eye product at that age, but boy am I glad I did. Remember, it is the thinnest skin on our entire body and unfortunately the FIRST place that starts to show signs of aging (a.k.a. wrinkles).

My opinion is to at least start using an eye cream by the age of 25. This way you beat wrinkles to the punch; perhaps avoid their arrival for a few extra years. Now to all my twenty-something gals out there, this doesn't mean you steal your mother's beloved eye cream for yourself....or even vica versa. Different age groups have different needs. The younger you are, the lighter-weight product you'll need. As you get older though, you'll require something more rich and nourishing as the skin gets drier and less elastic.

One of the looks I am LOVING this season is the dark lip. Paired with a minimalist eye, this look is a perfect mix of sexy, sophisticated and polished. As much as I love a classic red pout, using a shade with a plum or fig undertone is a modern twist during the cooler months.

If an opaque shade is not for you, definitely find a finish that you feel comfortable with. I like a stain during the day and then up the amp for a night out with something creamy, dark and rich.

I wasn't expecting to do such a bright look today. Honestly. I had been sent a bunch of goodies from Marcelle and Annabelle cosmetics a while back and wanted to play with them. I also haven't done a face of the day in some time and wanted to share a fun look. This is what came out of it all. A little 80's, a splash of punk and a sprinkle of Barbie. I dig it. Do you?

I was really impressed with the vibrancy of Tutu eyeshadow. Not to say I wasn't dazzled by the other eyeshadows (they are DAMN good quality for the price), I just didn't expect it to be that pink. LOVE IT!

Hello beauty lovers!

One of my clients recently sent me a package with a couple of products from an up and coming Canadian line called Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics. The first thing I noticed was the amazing way the company has branded itself. Created by Andrea Pahn, a non-conforming (in a good way) mother of three, the brands philosophy is to stray from the boring day-to-day product and add a splash of risque into the mix.

The company's literature that I received contained images, like the following, which was a little too bad ass to ignore. With polishes named Pop My Cherry, Nail Me and Cougar, how could they NOT have my attention?!

When playing with the polishes, I noticed that these definitely hold their own against other brands I love and use. The packaging is simple and pretty. You get a lot of product and the applicator is nice and thin for precision. The actual lacquer applies very nicely; two coats are plenty to get the true colour. All their products are "3-free", meaning they do not contain formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP. As well, they are non-toxic and rate a 1 on the skin deep cosmetics safety database. A funky brand that's safe to use - always a winner in my books.

There is nothing better than the thrill of Halloween. It's the time of year that I love. The crispness in the air, the mystery of the night sky and ghoulish makeup galore!

This past weekend I attended an early Halloween party and because my boyfriend was dressing up as Shaun from the film 'Shaun of the Dead', I thought a zombie girl would be a fun idea. I know there are so many variations of what a zombie would look like, so I interpreted the look in my own way. I work A LOT so I needed a costume that wouldn't take a lot of time to get ready. Clothes were easy; bloody up a shirt and look all around ragged and beaten up. The makeup was the fun part. Making myself look like an undead, flesh eating ghoul was a lot easier than one might think.

I am a sucker for primers. It's slowly becoming a new addiction and I'm not sure why. I have small pores, any lines I have are thankfully nothing bothersome and I don't have any serious texture that would require any major correction.

So what is my deal?!

In any case, the Magic Perfecting Base is my most recent primer addition. Because I don't have skin that would vouch for a decent comparison, I decided to pop it in my professional kit and put it to the test. And the story begins...

I recently booked a wedding gig for one of my brow clients and I got to doll up the bride and her girls. I used the Magic Perfecting Base on all of the ladies and was impressed at the results it gave for a drug store product. One girl in particular comes to mind. She had quite large pores in the inner cheeks and on the nose. The slightest amount of this primer seemed to erase it all and it didn't flake when I went to apply her foundation over top. A little of this product goes a long way, friends. I will give you this tip though: let it set for a minute before applying a foundation.

From reading the ingredients as well as feeling the primer, this is a silicone based product. It leaves a matte finish and is surprisingly lightweight considering how thick it initially feels. I like the packaging. It's in a glass jar which allows you to use the product in its entirety, but buyer beware to use a spatula to avoid any cross contamination.

I bought this on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart for $15.99 CDN. The price point is lower than other higher end primers on the market and in some cases exceeds the performance of the ones with the higher price tag. I would definitely recommend giving it a try if you suffer from large pores, minor scarring or fine lines.

I had the amazing opportunity to do makeup backstage for UK hair stylist Tim Hartley's show in Toronto. The man is a creative genius with hair and was fun to work with. Tim had three makeup looks for his show to complement the three main themes of his new collection, Quiff with Davines. All three were quite different but pulled inspiration from some of my personal favourites.

Primer, serum, lotion and potion. Whatever you want to call this product, it's nothing short of brilliant. The Lifting Base by Eva Garden is one of the four products released in the Beauty Care Collection. I have been using this in my makeup space on clients and colleagues for about a month now and I am more than impressed with its immediate results.

With most serums, you have to use them for a few weeks before you start noticing a change and improvement. This is not the case with the Lifting Base. This lightweight, anti-aging liquid-gel goes on light and easy without having to use a lot of product. Ingredients like red algae and flax flower extract leave the skin hydrated, smooth and in repair mode. Fine lines seem to fade before your eyes thanks to a Botox-like complex. You notice a difference after the first time you use it.

This base can be worn alone or before a moisturizer. This is AMAZING under foundation and gives you a youthful glow and lift. As a makeup artist, it is a miracle for helping instantly hydrate those dry spots on a clients face (nose, chin and forehead) where foundation can look cakey and awful if not dealt with.

The Lifting Base is officially one of my new favourites! You can find this little treasure at select salons and spas that carry the Eva Garden boutique brand.

review: moor spa facial polish

As a makeup and skincare specialist, I'm always keen to trying new products. One of my clients is one of the owners of L'Moor which is a distributor of Moor Spa products. She let me try out one of their exfoliants, assuring me that I would really enjoy it.

I'm very apprehensive of traditional facial scrubs because they tend to be quite irritating to the skin. This is due to granular bits consisting of shells, pits and seeds that can cause micro-tears in our delicate skin. The point of difference with Moor Spa Facial Polish is that the “scrub” is actually jojoba beads that loosen and soften hardened sebum to help remove dead skin cells. These beads are soft and round as to not irritate even the most sensitive skin. That, and its aloe vera gel base, provide an ideal lightweight and anti-inflammatory blend for all skin types.

Flipping through this seasons fashion magazines, I have noticed a return of gorgeous textured hair. Gone are poker straight tresses and a head full of curls and waves have become the hottest accessory. I know that not everyone is blessed with naturally beautiful waves, nor do we want to fuss with curling irons or hot rollers when we're pressed for time.

I have, first hand, discovered a sort of retro solution for getting hot, voluminous hair to update your look. That, my friends, is the perm. Yes, you heard me correctly. A perm. Guaranteed you all have images of 80's pop stars and grandmothers with their tight little short curls. I am not talking about that kind of perm. Things have changed a lot with that hair service, and now you can really customize what your hair looks like in the end. I gave it a shot and now I'm hooked.

Modern day perms are not as damaging as they used to be. Granted, you still have to suffer through the smell of perm solution, but you know what they say...pain is beauty. New techniques in how the hair is rodded is pretty creative as well. For example, my perm was 'rodded' with elastic bands. This allows the waves to fall as naturally curly/wavy hair would. A traditional rodding method of placing the rods in rows, may give a beautiful result, but I really thought the elastic band method left people pretty shocked and impressed at how much my hair looked naturally textured.

If you haven't thought about trying a perm, I would reconsider. Talk to your stylist to see what type of perm would suit your hair type and style. Do note that if you colour your hair, get your texture service first and then wait 1-2 weeks for a colour.

First of all, I have to say I feel like a guilty little bugger. With summer in full swing, most of you trade in your heavier foundations for a sheer alternative. This is where a good tinted moisturizer comes along. What I look for in a tinted moisturizer is a small but important list of three requirements.

SPF. It must be at least a fifteen so my skin is protected. I do tend to add a facial sunscreen underneath my moisturizer anyways, but if I'm on the go or at the cottage, fewer steps are better.

Coverage. I know for the most part these are sheer coverage products, but if I have a bit of redness in my complexion, I want my tinted moisturizer to be buildable as to cover and even that out. Nevertheless, if I get the odd breakout, I won't hesitate to add a bit of my favourite concealer to spot treat those stubborn complexion woes.

Texture. Depending on a persons skin type, this preference will vary. Most of the tinted moisturizers I love are oil-free to avoid that heavy feeling on the skin (which is awful on a sticky, humid Canadian summer day). I tend to recommend to my clients to go for a lightweight texture so that it's hydrating enough in the summer, and easily layered over a moisturizer in the winter months where one might need a little 'something extra'.

This is my ideal choice of a daily makeup base. I will admit that I have been blessed with a very good complexion, and so the coverage of a sheerer product is fine with me. For those ladies who are on a beauty budget and can't buy a variety of products for seasonal use, another trick is to take your favourite foundation and dilute it with an appropriate moisturizer. Also with that trick, you gals who may need a slightly fuller coverage can play around with foundation vs. moisturizer ratio to get that perfect finish by simply adding more foundation to the mixture.

My tip for a nice, even application (not just with a tinted moisturizer, but with ANY foundation) is to start in the centre of the face, being the forehead, nose, inner cheeks and chin. Adding the foundation there first with your fingers, sponge or brush, you can then blend the product out towards the perimeter of the face so you avoid the chance of the dreaded line of demarcation. Most of us need most of the coverage in these concentrated areas so this allows for a nice application that is perfectly blended every time.

As some of you might already know, I will be doing makeup at the MuchMusic Video Awards pre-party this year with the Annabelle Cosmetics team. I am very excited that I was asked to be part of the pre-party festivities.

Today I was due to get my regular nail service at Chrysalis Nails in Oshawa, Ontario. The ever talented Katie knew I was going to be amongst some elite folks this Sunday and gave me some appropriate nail art. All I can say is wow!....Two hours plus of hard work.

REVIEW - Annabelle Zebra Bronzing Pressed Powder

I got this lovely little compact in the mail from Groupe Marcelle's Isabel the other day when I got home from a long day of making people up. Funny enough, I had just finished talking to a friend about bronzers that day and how I was looking for something sexy and shimmery for the upcoming summer months. The angels sang when I opened up Isabel's package.

This once limited edition product (which will finally become a permanent item in the Annabelle catalogue in July) is an amazing addition to my makeup case. I love my matte bronzer for a more natural finish but I am in love with the sexy and sheer sheen this bronzer adds to a look. The zebra motif gives the variation of amber tones dimension once it's applied onto the face, arms, legs or decollete. I have literally just used this on its own on my cheeks when I'm strapped for time in the morning and it's gorgeous!

It's light texture and oil-free formulation make it suitable for any skin type which is great.
